Name:Lan Zhan | Lan Wangji | Hanguang Jun
In a China slightly different from the one we know, there were many cultivator sects -- warriors and paladins of a sort, that fight evil spirits, demons, and carried out justice for the common people.

The Lan Sect of Gusu, raised up two young men as the premier cultivators of their generation, two of the most skilled, the twin Jades of Lan. The eldest Lan Huan, courtesy name Lan Xichen is the current leader of the sect. His younger brother, however, Lan Zhan, courtesy name Lan Wangji, is his heir apparent and is Deemed second most handsome among Cultivators and one of the strongest of the junior fellows when he met who would become the infamous Yiling Patriarch, Wei Ying, courtesy name Wei Wuxian.

The two, despite wild differences, were thrown together by circumstances. Wei Wuxian is everything that Lan Zhan is not: wild, creative, untamed and unrestrained. Indeed, he had an influence on the younger Jade, and over time, the two were boon companions through school and then their time as hostages of the power-hungry Wen clan's movement against the other sects. While Wei Wuxian was the truest friend you could ever have, Lan Zhan's feelings were rapidly changing from the friendship among cultivators to a love that would last beyond death itself.

They both took very different paths to reach their respective fates - Lan Zhan escaped a great deal of hardship that fell upon Wei Wuxian, though he saw his Sect's seat of power burn and was tortured by the Wen, he still came out of the experience mostly intact. Before the Sunshot Campaign, these young cultivators were doing their best to deal with injustices through the power hungry Wen Clan seeking out the mystical Yin Iron, a weapon of great spiritual power, though filled with resentful energy. However, when the Wen clan attacked and decimated smaller clans, and then held all the junior cultivators hostage, things began to get worse rapidly.

Though the Sunshot campaign was a success, Lan Zhan came out of it short a friend as Wei Wuxian did terrible things with the Stygian Tiger Amulet. Wei Wuxian rescued the civilian remnants of the now decimated Wen clan, and protected them in a terrible and forbidden place- the Burial Mounds, where terrible battles had occurred so often the ground was seeped with ghosts and corpses, full of resentful energy... a place he'd spent some time surviving in earlier, unknown to Lan Zhan. This began the life of Wei Wuxian as the Yiling Patriarch.

While Wei Wuxian was busy getting himself into trouble, Lan Zhan was doing the same, if in the name of saving his friend. He constantly asked him back to study at Cloud Recesses in Gusu, and each time was denied. Though he asked repeatedly for Wei Wuxian to return to Gusu, the corruption of the resentful energy, Wei Wuxian interpreted the request as a place to punish him for his transgressions due to the rules-heavy Sect's nature, while Lan Zhan just wanted Wei Wuxian to rest and heal, seeking to help him leave the path of this dark cultivation. Between missions as a cultivator, Lan Zhan studied forbidden texts to try and find a way to calm the resentful energy that was now infecting a man who he could really no longer deny that he was in love with.

All was for naught, and Lan Zhan lost him anyway. Wei Wuxian chose death rather then to see Lan Zhan slain trying to save him. Though he fled to Burial Mounds to see if Wei Wuxian's soul would be drawn there. Instead, he found Wen Yuan, the last child of the Wen, who he spirited to Cloud Recesses to be raised under a new name and identity as his son.

Lan Zhan faced consequences for his defense of the demonic cultivator: whipped for each Lan Elder he fought -- 33 -- and imprisoned in the back caves of Cloud Recesses while he spend three years recovering. Once free and still plagued by grief he sought out the pleasures and pain that Wei Wuxian had known; the liquor of Emperor's Smile and the burn of a Wen Clan brand that Wei Wuxian himself had once been scarred by. For over a decade, he played Inquiry on his guqin, begging for Wei Wuxian to answer him. The clans had repeatedly attempted to summon his soul, but in the end: no one heard from Wei Wuxian after death, not even his soulmate Lan Zhan.

Love, resentful energy, and karma all find a way, though. Wei Wuxian was brought back via transmigration, old wrongs were set right, with Wei Wuxian's name cleared of some sins that had been laid at his doorstep. In the end, Lan Zhan gained his love back ten fold, now had his beloved Wei Wuxian alive and well. They parted to go their separate ways and work, but it won't be for too long -- Lan Zhan's love won't be denied for long.
